Let there be light!" The people living in darkness have seen a great light (Matthew 4:16). There's a lot to be said for seeing the light. Some may beg to differ but seeing the light will change your life forever. It did mine.
Have you ever heard a familiar voice call your name and you turn around but no one is there?
Me too. It was an audible voice calling my name, Tammy. Is someone trying to get my attention? Then there's complete strangers that walk up to me while I'm minding my own business and start talking to me about God and Jesus? I know... I must have HELP written on my forehead.
So there I am it's 1980, I'm a small town girl in the city of Minneapolis. My mom has business with her job and drops me off on Hennepin Ave. I'm going to occupy my time at a movie, The Blues Brothers. Who knew that Hennepin Ave is the red light district in the city of Minneapolis? Not I. In fact I was not even familiar with the term, red light district. So I'm more than a few minutes early and found an area to sit down and do some people watching. I was pretty shy at this time in my life, so when I was approached by a young man with long curly hair and a violin, I was a bit taken aback. "Can I play for you?" I looked around as if to say, "who me"? So he begins to play his violin and is quite accomplished. At this point I'm a little embarrassed, because I don't really want the attention he his drawing our way. After this serenade he asked if he could show me around the city, which I refused of course. I wasn't that dumb though still very naive. Then he offered to buy me an ice cream cone, I accepted the offer. This is all very out of the ordinary for me, and I am totally perplexed and wondering who the heck is this guy. I let him know I'm visiting from out of town, and I'm going to see the Blues Brothers. I asked him if he'd like to go with me, after all we'd been talking and eating ice cream cones, so why not? His response was very curious, he said, "if it's not too sinful." I'm thinking not too sinful. It was at this point that I had to ask, "do you get high?" He responded that he didn't do that anymore, because he was a Christian. Hmm... that's what I thought I was.
I was brought up in the Lutheran denomination. I had knowledge of Jesus and who he was. I even prayed as a young child and all throughout my teens. Somehow I knew this guy was talking about something more. Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful for what I was taught in the Lutheran church, but for me there was something lacking.
I don't even remember the fiddlers name, but he went to the Blues Brothers with me. We laughed and both thought it was a hilarious movie. This guy probably felt like he was on a mission from God, like Elwood and Jake, to get me to see the light. Afterwards the sun had set and the crazies started to come out of the woodwork. I was a bit horrified when a man came stumbling by ranting that he had killed her. My new friend pointed down the street to the church he attended, it was called Jesus People church. Another young man that seemed to know him came up to us and the two of them went on their way. My mom pulled up to the same spot she had dropped me off at. I got in the car and we drove away.
Obviously this encounter stands out for me. Like the voice I would hear calling my name I truly believe was not happenstance but deliberate. Perhaps even supernatural. What do you think? Just a little more food for thought, do you think John Belushi really saw the light?
